Diaper Rash in Babies

All babies wear diapers of one type or the other and sometimes they develop a diaper rash, which results in the baby’s skin to become tender, scaly, red and sore. These conditions can be caused by use of baby wipes, certain soaps, detergents and keeping soiled diapers on for long.

Diapers come with a plastic that prevents not only leaking but also reduces air circulation. This creates a hot and humid environment that is ideal for the growth of fungi and rashes.

Sometimes when the baby eats something new it changes the content of poop and can cause diaper rashes. The worst thing for this situation is if the baby develops diarrhea as it really worsens the conditions.

Ways and means to prevent diaper rash:

1. The first and foremost thing to be done is to change the wet or soiled diaper whenever possible. This would keep the baby clean and reduce the chances of further rashes developing and worsening the condition.

2. For every three times that a diaper is changed, make it a habit to soak the baby’s bottom with warm water preferably running water. This helps clean the area infected properly and helps fight rashes.

3. The most important thing to consider is to dry the baby completely prior to putting a new diaper. This will eliminate any water from being in contact with the baby’s skin and hence reduce the growth of fungi and other rash causing organisms.

4. The best way to dry the skin effectively is to pat it with a soft cloth. Avoid rubbing as it causes irritation, which further increases the rashes.

5. Another important thing is to tie the diaper loose. It should never be air tight and should allow a little bit of circulation of air.

6. For cloth diapers, it is essential to rinse properly so as to remove any traces of detergent or soap. A number of people use fabric softeners to make the diapers soft. This is a big mistake as even these sometimes irritate the skin.

Most experts suggest that the best way is to leave the baby without any diapers for as long as possible every single day. This would allow the baby’s skin to breathe and improve the condition quickly. Taking good care usually helps get rid of diaper rashes within two to three days but if the problem persists a doctor should be contacted.
